Woodlice are a good source of food for the survivor. Woodlice can be found in rotting damp leaves, under dead tree bark, around the bottom of trees and under rotten wood and stones. Large numbers can be quickly gathered with minimum effort for maximum gain as they feed mainly on dead plant matter so there is very little risk when eating them.
The woodlouse has a calcium rich shell-like exoskeleton. To prepare the woodlice for eating simply place your survival tin lid on hot embers and roast your woodlice on the lid. The reason the woodlice are roasted is to ensure any parasites it carries on its exoskeleton are killed.
The woodlice will turn a very, very slight shade of pink, this can happen very quickly. Once this colour they are ready to eat. Be careful not to over roast them as they turn to dust. There is a slight hint of shell fish and a delightful, softly textured crunch!
